Lightweighting is a goal not just for light vehicles, as the folks at Century Inc. will gladly tell you. Its Advanced Materials Division has developed an aluminum metal matrix composite (MMC) manufacturing technology, along with a demonstrator brake drum for heavy trucks that weighs 38.5 lb (17.5 kg) and is interchangeable with standard cast iron drums weighing 70 lb (32 kg).

Lightweighting heavy trucks

Heavy trucks that weigh less but still carry the same payload—that’s the future according to Volvo Group engineers. Though lightweight technology has mainly been the domain of Volvo Aero for its aircraft engine components, engineers at AB Volvo’s research company, Volvo Technology, believe using similar technology can reduce the weight of the cab and chassis in heavy trucks by at least 20% within 10 years.

EBS enhancements from Wabco

Wabco has introduced two technological enhancements for its electronic braking systems (EBS) for truck and trailer combinations. The two developments are designed to improve the performance of braking systems fitted to extra long trailers and also truck and trailer combinations where two or more trailers are used.
